Rumors: when somebody tells people something that stretches the truth or is not true at all.
The word "rumors" is important in the novel 13 Reasons Why because that's how it all started turning ugly for Hannah Baker. Rumors were spread about Hannah after she kissed Justin and then continued to get worse which earned her a bad reputation. Rumors are what drove Hannah to kill herself.
Wanted: to feel needed by someone or something.
The word "wanted" is important because sometimes the reason to people killing themselves is because they don't feel wanted. Hannah was wanted by many people actually but not exactly in a good way all the time. She was wanted because of rumors people spread about her and things she did according to other people. Hannah was a pretty girl and that's another reason people wanted her. She felt she was being used by the people who wanted her.
Hurt: a pain felt after an event; both physical and mental.
The word "hurt" is extremely important to the novel because that's what Hannah felt most of the time. She was betrayed by her "friends" and friends is in quotations because they were never really her friends they just wanted something from her whether it be company or a drive to a party or just someone to talk to. Hannah was a loyal friend who got screwed over by everyone in the end. She got hurt by multiple people throughout the novel who she thought she could trust.
People: human beings.
The word "people" is important to the novel because people contribute to Hannah's death, 13 people in particular. People spread the rumors, people said hurtful things, people did stupid things. People's actions are what drove Hannah Baker to commit suicide.
Know: to understand or comprehend a concept
The word "know" is important because Hannah wants people to know why she killed herself. she wants everyone to know what they did to influence her decision. Clay is thinking that he would have tried to prevent it if he would have known before it happened and now he feels like it was his fault in a way.

13 Reason I Stay
Have you ever listened to a dead person speak? In 13 Reasons Why 13 people experience this because they receive suicide tapes from the main character Hannah Baker and have to listen to all 13 or there are consequences. In a similar novel called If I Stay the reader listens to the main character Mia Hall's thoughts while she is in a coma due to a terrible car accident. These two novels are similar due to the fact Mia and Hannah are around the same age, neither of them had very many friends and they are both focused on the topic of dying.
The topic of death is a frightening subject yet it is used effectively in both novels. Hannah and Mia both had a choice to live or to die. Hannah's choice was to commit suicide while Mia had to choose to hold on or let herself go, "But that's what I want and I could see why it might not be what you want. So I just wanted to tell you that I understand if you go. It's okay if you have to leave us. It's okay if you want to stop fighting." (Forman 181). People heard Hannah's thoughts but Mia's were silent and to herself. Hannah and Mia were around the same age, both in high school just trying to get through it. Neither Hannah nor Mia had very many friends. The "friends" Hannah had all turned against her at one point or another. Courtney is a huge example of betraying Hannah's trust by spreading rumors about her at a party she wanted to go to together as "friends" just because she needed a ride which is explained through out Cassette 3 Side A in more detail. Both novels are on the topic of death. In 13 Reasons Why the main character Hannah is the one who died and is telling her story through tapes to each person who contributed to the reason she killed herself. She wants to make every single one of those 13 people feel responsible in a way and have to listen to everything she has to say. In the novel If I Stay there are multiple deaths as well as the main character Mia being put into a coma after a terrible car accident. Both themes of these novels are very dark and serious but put into a lighter mood. There are jokes made by each main character in each novel, "Now, why would a dead girl lie? Hey! That sounds like a joke. Why would a dead girl lie? Answer: Because she can't stand up." (Asher 8). Hannah has a pretty good sense of humor considering the condition she was in at the time she made these tapes knowing she was going to end her life. These two teenage girls are similar in the way that neither of them are afraid of dying.
Each novel is similar in multiple ways which are used effectively throughout the stories. 13 Reasons Why and If I Stay are both amazing, deep novels that people should read if they enjoy intense stories about life and difficult choices and situations. Both are strongly recommended because they are both exceptional books.

Mark Morton
A couple weeks ago Mark Morton come talk to my Civics and Careers class about being a professor and a writer. Mr.Morton explained getting his PhD in English literature. He has worked at a university as well as written 3 books. I like the idea of being a writer although the job doesn't pay very well.
I don't think working at a university would be my first choice for a job to be completely honest. It really doesn't interest me but being a writer is a whole different story. Although being a writer doesn't pay much it really sparks my interest. I like the thought of being able to write about whatever you want to. I like being creative so it would be a good option for me. I like the thought of the freedom that comes along with the job. Overall Mr Morton was a good guest speaker and I thought that his talk was interesting to listen to.

Ann Liebau
A week or so ago Ann Liebau came to speak to my Civics and Careers class about her job. She helps women who want to give birth at home. She explained how it works and what kind of things they do during the process. As well as what courses you have to take in university and such. It was really interesting.
I think the job would be interesting but I don't think I could do it. The idea of having to deliver a baby doesn't exactly appeal to me. I don't think it's something that I'd really want to do being a mother giving birth at home, I'd rather have a baby in the hospital. Although it would be more relaxing to have a baby at home it would make me nervous. I think it's really cool that people have to option to give birth at home though because it would be so much less stressful.

Sarah Leishman
About a month ago we had Sarah Leishman, a CYW come to talk to my Civics and Careers class about her job. She talked a little bit about what a child and youth worker does and what kind of hours she works and such. I thought it was interesting.
I think I'd like being a CYW and I was actually looking into programs at colleges and universities for the job. I just like the idea of being able to talk to kids that are going through things because it's always nice to have someone to talk to. I like helping people so I think it would be a good job for me. It just seems like a really cool job and it interests me so it's a good option to look into.

Richard McDonald
A few weeks ago my Civics and Careers class got to meet Richard McDonald. He talked to our class about the multiple jobs he had before the job he has now. I thought it was really interesting to listen to all the jobs he had before the one he got to currently.
I think being a comedy writer would be a sweet job! Mr.McDonald actually wrote a script for the Red Green Show. Honestly it would be a great job because you get to show people your sense of humor and it would be the best feeling knowing you wrote something so great. I would actually love this as a job and I'm kind of considering being a writer of some sort because it interests me greatly! I think that Mr.McDonald's presentation kind of sparked my interest because he made it sound really cool and enjoyable. I like traveling and he said you get to travel a lot for short periods of time. This is a job I could see myself doing

Amy Beamer
This morning we had a guest speaker in my Civics and Careers class. Her name is Amy Beamer and she works at the Waterloo Public Library. Most speakers we have in class talk about their jobs but this morning Ms. Beamer talked about interviews instead. I came in late so I didn't hear the whole discussion.
During the discussion she talked about good and bad interviews as well as good and bad employees. Some things that were discussed were how Ms.Beamer has had people who lied on their resumes as well as people who come in for their interview and act like they could care less if they got the job or not. I think pretending not to care is probably the stupidest thing you can do at an interview because you have to show the employer that you want the job and you're excited to have an opportunity to work for them.We also discussed how when you first get hired for about the first three months you're on probation so that means you have to be the very best employee that you can. An example would be being on time to work every day unless you have a valid reason to be late. Ms.Beamer said that while someone was on probation where she works they were late more than once and fell asleep on the job but they have smartened up and they are working like an average employee now.
I think it is good that we had a guest speaker come talk to us about interviews since we are in grade 10 and starting to apply for jobs if we don't have one already. I personally don't have a job yet but I am going to be handing out resumes soon so the discussion was helpful so now I know what I should and shouldn't do and say during an interview.

Justin Kominar
Last week our civics class had a guest speaker. His name is Justin Kominar. He works with computers and web design. His job sounds interesting but it isn't something I would want to do to be completely honest.
Justin has a very interesting sounding job but I know it isn't the job for me. The reason I say this is because I get frustrated with computers really fast. So I don't really think I'd be any good at the job. Like it would be a really cool job to have if you're really into computers and designing websites. I do truly appreciate the people who have this job because they designed the sites that I use like Tumblr, Facebook and Twitter.
I thought that Mr Kominar was a very good guest speaker. He knew what he was talking about and answered all questions with the answers people were looking for. Overall it was a good presentation.

Christopher Graves
Last week my grade 10 civics class had a guest speaker come in and talk to us about his job. His name was Christopher Graves. Mr.Graves works for a charity called Project Hope. Project Hope is a charity that raises money for orphans and widows in Africa.
I think this would be an amazing job to have. I love the feeling of helping people and knowing that I'm doing something to make somebody's life better. I feel like it would honestly be a job that would e easy to enjoy getting up and going to every morning.
Project Hope is an amazing organization, because of it orphans the opportunity to go to school each year. They have brought orphans back to Canada to go to University and give them the opportunity to have an education. The kids enjoy going to school and learning while we complain about it every day.

Melissa Durrell
Melissa Durrell came to speak to my grade 10 civics class a little about her job yesterday. She started out in journalism. She spend 15 years in journalism. She decided that journalism wasn't something she wanted to do forever so she then moved into politics.Melissa has been a politician for two years.
The day of a journalist sounds very long and repetitive but it sounds interesting. I think I would probably like it. It would be a cool job to have especially as a first real job. I think I would like hearing all these stories and being involved in putting them out there. Journalism could be a possible career choice for me.
I don't think being a politician would be a good job for me because politics don't interest me in any way. Melissa seemed passionate about her job so she clearly enjoys it. It could be an interesting job if politics are something that interest you.
I think Melissa Durrell was a good guest speaker. She knew her information well and she spoke loud enough for everyone to hear. Her presentation was interesting. The only thing I think she could have avoided was apologizing that her slides weren't as good as they could have been.

Why To Kill A Mockingbird
I had to do a final summative on the novel To Kill a Mockingbird. I decided to create a tumblr page to show how the novel has impacted pop culture today and some of the references to the book in pop culture. The link is below :)

Edge Wins Gold
Waterloo- Elora Fergus Edge wins gold at Ontario AA Provincials 2013.
On Sunday February 28, 2013, Elora Fergus Edge ringette team won gold at AA provincials in Waterloo Ontario.
The team played eight games over a period of four days. Six out of the eight games were won.
The gold medal game was extremely close. Elora Fergus Edge beat Waterloo Wildfire 6 to 5. Ashley Flemming, one of the referees stated, "It was a good clean game of ringette and I was very impressed."
The girls worked hard all year at practices and dryland sessions which paid off in the long run in a gold medal and the opportunity to go to Nationals as Team Ontario in New brunswick.
Both coaches were impressed with how their teams performed. Edge coach David Page stated, "I'm so proud of my girls and I am honored that I will be taking this team to Nationals!"
Elora Fergus Edge U16AA team was an overall successful team all year receiving a medal in every tournament they played in including the most important tournament of the year which was provincials where they succeeded in winning a gold medal.

Standardized Testing: Why Do We Need It?
I personally dislike writing tests like this because they stress me out and I'm probably not the only one who gets stressed over them either. I think they are good to see where the students are at in English and Math but they shouldn't count for marks. I know OCA is just a test to see where you are in English because you're coming from middle school and it is a good test so you know what will be expected of you in grade 9 English class. Grade 9 EQAO is used for marks in Math class which I don't think is fair because some people get stressed on tests and actually do worse than they know they can. I know it doesn't affect marks by a lot but it could put someone into the position of failing right before exams. In grade 10 all students are forced to take the literacy test. If you don't get above a certain grade you can't graduate until you do or take a course to get the credit to graduate. This is not fair because a student who gets 90% in English class could fail somehow because of something stupid and have to take it again in grade 11. Overall I think these standardized tests are dumb and unnecessary. They should be used to see how the student is going not for marks.
TEDx Experience
I went to TEDx Waterloo on Wednesday March 29, 2013. I found it extremely interesting what issues people have faced in their lives. I liked how there was a 9 year old that talked about saving the oceans because she had a good message and it was something she was very passionate about and you could tell by the way she presented her information. One of my favourite talks was Holly Painter she kept me interested the whole time. I think the event was well run overall but it was a little unorganized at some points. I left at around 3:00 pm because I was tired and getting bored. I think after lunch everyone started getting tired because lunch was too long. There was a lot crammed in one day so I think maybe having less talks or shorter talks would be a good idea for next time.

Human Nature: Good or Evil?
In my honest opinion I think people are essentially evil in one way or another. I don't think people started off this way but over the years it has come to it. I think that the things we get taught can be used as evil instead of good. We hurt one another just for the sake of hurting someone whether it's physically or verbally. If people were essentially good then there would be no wars, no reason for walk outs and sit ins, and no reason to hurt anybody. Even the nicest people have evil in them. There is a point where people break and snap and sometimes that's the only time you'll see evil in a nice person.. Every single person in the world is evil. I don't really think there are bad people in the world just good people who make bad decisions and when they make that bad choice you see the evil in that person come out.
We are taught to be good, nice to everyone, and to share. It's hard to do what we are taught when everyone around us is doing the exact opposite. When you are a young child you can't tell good from bad so your teachers and parents are there to tell you good from bad. Their opinions on what is good and what is bad could be completely different. The real question is what is good and bad?

Personality Explorations
In doing this assignment I have noticed that I my major learning style is kinesthetic, I am an easy going person who enjoys working with people and am good at it and that I'm a creative person.
I am a person who likes doing rather than watching or listening due to the fact that I am a kinesthetic learner. Kinesthetic means hands-on stuff and prefer learning by doing. I tend to pay attention better if there is some sort of movement going on. I noticed that I always have something in my hand when listening to something because it's easier to pay attention.
I also noticed that I'm a people person so I like working with people. This was proven when I was finished answering the questions to Quiz #5-Interest Inventory as well as Quiz #9-True Colours Personality Assessment when my brightest colour was orange and some of the qualities were flexible and easy going which makes it easy to work with people. I like group work most of the time because sometimes it's easier working with people rather than by myself.
The assignment showed me that I am a creative person. I do enjoy writing about what I want over doing a topic assigned by the teacher. In Quiz #4-Work Values one of my top two work values was self-expression and after finishing Quiz #6- Myers-Briggs Type Inventory one of the career possibilities was a journalist. I found out I was a Communicator in Quiz 10-Changemaker. I had an idea I was somewhat creative beofre this assignment.
I found this assignment really interesting because most of the quizzes I took gave results that somewhat matched my personality and such. I found almost all of the quizzes accurate although some quizzes were not. Overall it was an interesting assignment even if the answers sounded nothing like you because you got to find out things about yourself you may not have known before.

Alison Flemming
Recently my class had a guest speaker come to talk us about her job. Her name was Alison Flemmign and her job was social media. So basically her job is to do twitter updates and make facebok pages and update them for companies. Although I do enjoy social networking I don't think I would like a job doing so. I feel like I would get bored of just tweeting and updating facebook all the time. Some aspects of the job sound interesting but I just don't feel like it's something I would enjoy doing even though I go on twitter for at least 5 hours on a daily basis. I thought she was a good guest speaker and answered questions well to help give us a greater knowledge on her job. Something else she did that I liked is she knew exactly what she wanted to talk about and explained what she does extremely well. Overall it was an enjoyable presentation even though it isn't a job that I am particularly interested in.

Scout Finch
"I think there's just one kind of folks. Folks." -Scout
Being the lucky grade 10 student I am I get to read To Kill A Mocking bird for English! I was asked to write about my favourite character basically. I decided to choose Scout (Jean- Louise Finch). Scout is the narrator and one of the main characters. I think she is interesting because she curious about absolutely everything that everyone says and does that she doesn't understand. She interests me mostly because she is brave and intelligent. She proves this throughout the first half of the book an example of her bravery is when her, Dill and Jem go into the Radley's backyard to try and talk to Boo. An example of her intelligence is the first day of school when her teacher asks her to read and write things for her she gets scolded for being more capable of reading and writing than all the other students who have failed the first grade a couple times. The funny thing about school is Scout hates it with a passion and tries to do everything to get out of it.

Late Mark Punishment
At this point 5% is taken off each day late which is fair unless the student has a legitimate excuse for the work not being done. In that case the student should talk to the teacher right away before class but I think that should be the only exception. Although it is the students fault if the work isn't done sometimes the teacher is at fault as well because in some cases the teacher does not give the students enough time to finish the project as they need which is unfair to the student. I think it is a little unfair to give a zero after it's a week late but that's probably the only way that students will get the message that work needs to be handed in. I don't think students who don't hand in work should be monitored because I feel like they would just skip. Also if they have other things to do during their MSIP they shouldn't be forced to do late work. There could be a reason why the student isn't getting their work done and if it happens often the teacher should confront them privately to see if there is a reason that is keeping them from doing their work.

AA Ontario Ringette Provincials
AA Ontario ringette provincials start next weekend!Provincials are like hockey play offs for ringette. This year they will be held in Waterloo, Ontario. Provincials start on Thursday March 7th, 2013 and end on Sunday March 10, 2013. The winning teams of each age division becomes Team Ontario and moves onto Nationals or Easterns depending on the age level.
In AA Provincials each team is guaranteed six round robin games (2 each day). How well each team does in the round robin games determines if they will play in the semi finals on Sunday morning. If there are ties there are "mini games" to determine who moves on. A mini game is a 10 minute game between the two teams tied and whoever wins the game moves on. Mini games are NOT sudden death so the whole game is played no matter what. Nobody wants mini games because they are extremely stressful and nerve racking! Most of the time the team who gets the first goal is the team who wins. There are opening ceremonies on Thursday night held in the Gym at Rim Park to introduce all the teams competing.
The teams who win provincials at their age division get to go to Nationals if they are a U16 team or older and Easterns if they are U14. There are 7 teams from Ontario going at the Junior (U16) level this year but only the number one team is Team Ontario and all the others go as their original team. Nationals are being held in New Brunswick this year. Easterns are being held in Nova Scotia. Every team at provincials main goal is to get to Nationals or Easterns because it extends the year for the team and it's a great team experience and a once in a life time chance.

Should students who cyber buller be suspended form school?
Ever since social networking sites have become popular in today's society, there have been many more cases of cyber bullying. I believe that students who cyber bully their peers should be suspened from school. I think this because school should be considered a safe learning environment. It is stressful for the victims to be around the bully, their grades might suffer and they might be afraid it will lead to physical bullying.
I stronly believe students who cyber bully other students should be suspened. Students should feel comfortable at school and being cyber bullied is stressful first of all because the victim doesn't want people to know the things being sent online due to the fact they could be embarrassing rumors or pictures. As well as being concerned about being embarrassed online they could be nervous to actually see the bully at school. Facing your online bully is nerve racking and the victim doesn't want to have to do that especially alone. In addition to being embarrassed and nervous the poor student should not have to deal with being afraid of going to school. Cyber bullying has actually caused people to skip class or school because they don't feel comfortable being near the person bullying them. Students should feel safe at school not afriad.
Students who are bullied in any way are likely to get lower grades than before the bullying started. To begin cyber bullying happens over text message as well as online. If the victim gets rude text messages constantly during class it is very distracting. Also, again the bully could intimedate the victim enough that they don't show up to school at all. Finally everything being said online is going to be on the student's mind rather than the math lesson being taught. I believe that the students are being cyber bullied pay attention less because the problem is on their mind and not school work.
Being cyber bullied is bad enough but it can lead to physical bullying. Personally I would want the bully suspened before that happened and I know every single person being cyber bullied would as well. The victim is definitely getting threatened in some way which would lead to the fear of physical abuse. The student being threatened as well as just being given looks from the bully is frightening and could lead to physical bullying if the victim looks at them wrong. Finally they could just be scared of the bully without being threatened or anything just because they might be bigger than them. The student causing the problem should be suspened before it gets to this point.
I stronly believe every student that bullies another student in any way should be suspened because it is extremely stressful to be comfortable and feel safe at school with the person they are scared of the most. Also it is hard to concentrate on school when other things are on their mind. As well as it being stressful and unfocussed it is frightening.
Here's a link to a movie about cyberbullying! It's a great movie and shows what can happen online:

Ted Talk : Logan LaPlante
Logan LaPlante's video really made me look at education in a completely different way. I think students should be allowed to be as creative as they want. In saying this I believe that we should have a say in what we have to write essays and paragraphs about because I think that if students have the choice to write about what ever they want it would be better quality work. I also think that students would learn better if the lessons were more interactive and interesting. For example the teacher could use a video to teach part of the lesson.
In a way schools try to make us be creative by offering arts programs as well as extra curricular activities. The only reason we have these things is to make the students happier which is good to know that the teachers and the school board actually do care somewhat about our happiness. The main goal of school is to teach us what we need to know to get a higher education and eventually a job, as well as teaching us social skills that we will need later on in life.
I enjoy being in the Future Forums course this year because it's different from every other class I have. I think it's a unique yet effective way of teaching and I like how we watch videos and get to work on social networking sites as well as having frequent class discussions. I find I can pay attention easier and find myself interested in the topics we have discussed so far in class. It's just different and I like different because different is more interesting.

TED Talk
I thought the TED talk we watched was really interesting. I think it is really cool how "WATSON" won against its two opponents on jepordy. I also thought it was really neat how the best protein folder in the world was a woman from Manchester.
Personally I didn't really say anything on Today's Meet but I was checking out what other people said. I found it kind of hard to follow and some people were talking about irrelevant things. I think it would have been better if did comment my opinion and if it was easier to follow. I think I'll try using my twitter next time because I think it would be easier.
I really liked the idea of discussing the video with other people my age. Today's Meet isn't my favourite thing to use because it just gets spammed and then it gets confusing.
Here's the link for anyone who would like to watch and feel free to comment!

About me! :)
Hey this is my first post so I just wanted to say a few things about myself. I love sports! I play ringette and this is my 11th year playing I believe. I also play field lacrosse and this summer will be my 3rd year playing. As well as ringette and lacrosse I also enjoy track. I was on the school track team in grade 9 and will hopefully be on it again this year if we have a team . I love music! I play guitar and sing, I have written a couple of my own songs. I love 70s rock music it is probably one of my favourite genres. I have no idea what I want to do after school. Psychology interests me the most. I have a younger sister who I am very close with who is 13. I love reading fictional novels. Some favourites are The Hunger Games Trilogy, My Darkest Power Trilogy, Twilight and Gone.
