13 Reasons Why

Rumors: when somebody tells people something that stretches the truth or is not true at all.
The word "rumors" is important in the novel 13 Reasons Why because that's how it all started turning ugly for Hannah Baker. Rumors were spread about Hannah after she kissed Justin and then continued to get worse which earned her a bad reputation. Rumors are what drove Hannah to kill herself.

Wanted: to feel needed by someone or something.
The word "wanted" is important because sometimes the reason to people killing themselves is because they don't feel wanted. Hannah was wanted by many people actually but not exactly in a good way all the time. She was wanted because of rumors people spread about her and things she did according to other people. Hannah was a pretty girl and that's another reason people wanted her. She felt she was being used by the people who wanted her.

Hurt: a pain felt after an event; both physical and mental.
The word "hurt" is extremely important to the novel because that's what Hannah felt most of the time. She was betrayed by her "friends" and friends is in quotations because they were never really her friends they just wanted something from her whether it be company or a drive to a party or just someone to talk to. Hannah was a loyal friend who got screwed over by everyone in the end. She got hurt by multiple people throughout the novel who she thought she could trust.

People: human beings.
The word "people" is important to the novel because people contribute to Hannah's death, 13 people in particular. People spread the rumors, people said hurtful things, people did stupid things. People's actions are what drove Hannah Baker to commit suicide.

Know: to understand or comprehend a concept
The word "know" is important because Hannah wants people to know why she killed herself. she wants everyone to know what they did to influence her decision. Clay is thinking that he would have tried to prevent it if he would have known before it happened and now he feels like it was his fault in a way.

13 Reason I Stay

Have you ever listened to a dead person speak? In 13 Reasons Why 13 people experience this because they receive suicide tapes from the main character Hannah Baker and have to listen to all 13 or there are consequences. In a similar novel called If I Stay  the reader listens to the main character Mia Hall's thoughts while she is in a coma due to a terrible car accident. These two novels are similar due to the fact Mia and Hannah are around the same age, neither of them had very many friends and they are both focused on the topic of dying.
The topic of death is a frightening subject yet it is used effectively in both novels. Hannah and Mia both had a choice to live or to die. Hannah's choice was to commit suicide while Mia had to choose to hold on or let herself go, "But that's what I want and I could see why it might not be what you want. So I just wanted to tell you that I understand if you go. It's okay if you have to leave us. It's okay if you want to stop fighting." (Forman 181). People heard Hannah's thoughts but Mia's were silent and to herself. Hannah and Mia were around the same age, both in high school just trying to get through it. Neither Hannah nor Mia had very many friends. The "friends" Hannah had all turned against her at one point or another. Courtney is a huge example of betraying Hannah's trust by spreading rumors about her at a party she wanted to go to together as "friends" just because she needed a ride which is explained through out Cassette 3 Side A in more detail. Both novels are on the topic of death. In 13 Reasons Why  the main character Hannah is the one who died and is telling her story through tapes to each person who contributed to the reason she killed herself. She wants to make every single one of those 13 people feel responsible in a way and have to listen to everything she has to say.  In the novel If I Stay   there are multiple deaths as well as the main character Mia being put into a coma after a terrible car accident. Both themes of these novels are very dark and serious but put into a lighter mood. There are jokes made by each main character in each novel, "Now, why would a dead girl lie? Hey! That sounds like a joke. Why would a dead girl lie? Answer: Because she can't stand up." (Asher 8).  Hannah has a pretty good sense of humor considering the condition she was in at the time she made these tapes knowing she was going to end her life. These two teenage girls are similar in the way that neither of them are afraid of dying.
Each novel is similar in multiple ways which are used effectively throughout the stories. 13 Reasons Why and If I Stay are both amazing, deep novels that people should read if they enjoy intense stories about life and difficult choices and situations. Both are strongly recommended because they are both exceptional books.

Mark Morton

A couple weeks ago Mark Morton come talk to my Civics and Careers class about being a professor and a writer.  Mr.Morton explained getting his PhD in English literature. He has worked at a university as well as written 3 books. I like the idea of being a writer although the job doesn't pay very well.
I don't think working at a university would be my first choice for a job to be completely honest. It really doesn't interest me but being a writer is a whole different story. Although being a writer doesn't pay much it really sparks my interest. I like the thought of being able to write about whatever you want to. I like being creative so it would be a good option for me. I like the thought of the freedom that comes along with the job.  Overall Mr Morton was a good guest speaker and I thought that his talk was interesting to listen to.

Ann Liebau

A week or so ago Ann Liebau came to speak to my Civics and Careers class about her job. She helps women who want to give birth at home. She explained how it works and what kind of things they do during the process. As well as what courses you have to take in university and such. It was really interesting.
I think the job would be interesting but I don't think I could do it. The idea of having to deliver a baby doesn't exactly appeal to me. I don't think it's something that I'd really want to do being a mother giving birth at home, I'd rather have a baby in the hospital. Although it would be more relaxing to have a baby at home it would make me nervous. I think it's really cool that people have to option to give birth at home though because it would be so much less stressful.

Sarah Leishman

About a month ago we had Sarah Leishman, a CYW come to talk to my Civics and Careers class about her job. She talked a little bit about what a child and youth worker does and what kind of hours she works and such. I thought it was interesting.
I think I'd like being a CYW and I was actually looking into programs at colleges and universities for the job. I just like the idea of being able to talk to kids that are going through things because it's always nice to have someone to talk to. I like helping people so I think it would be a good job for me. It just seems like a really cool job and it interests me so it's a good option to look into.

Richard McDonald

A few weeks ago my Civics and Careers class got to meet Richard McDonald. He talked to our class about the multiple jobs he had before the job he has now. I thought it was really interesting to listen to all the jobs he had before the one he got to currently.
I think being a comedy writer would be a sweet job! Mr.McDonald actually wrote a script for the Red Green Show. Honestly it would be a great job because you get to show people your sense of humor and it would be the best feeling knowing you wrote something so great. I would actually love this as a job and I'm kind of considering being a writer of some sort because it interests me greatly! I think that Mr.McDonald's presentation kind of sparked my interest because he made it sound really cool and enjoyable. I like traveling and he said you get to travel a lot for short periods of time. This is a job I could see myself doing
